PIERRE (AP) — A man who helped defeat two previous attempts by Hughes County commissioners to raise the county wheel tax has collected enough petition signatures to put the fate of another increase in the hands of voters.

David Braun collected about 700 signatures and turned them in to county officials,

County Finance Officer Shellie Baumgart tells the media that a review shows the petition sheets contain more than the 531 valid signatures needed to put the issue on the November ballot.

The tax increase was approved by commissioners to raise more money for roads and bridges. If it stands, the tax will rise by $2 per wheel, doubling the current rate.
