Since leaving the coaching staff for Dakota Wesleyan University’s golf team, Jenny Coluccio has teamed up with former Tigers golfer Dani (Bellet) Evenson to compete in the South Dakota Golf Association Two-Woman Championship.

The duo came away with their third straight title in the event with a two-round total of 137 Saturday and Sunday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell. Saturday, the golfers carded a 67 and finished Sunday’s round with a 70.

Coluccio coached Evenson, formerly Dani Bellet until her June 30 marriage to Tyler Evenson, for two years at Dakota Wesleyan before becoming the head coach for the University of Sioux Falls.

The two won the weekend event by seven strokes over Julie Jansa and Kelli Sinksen, both of Sioux Falls.

Beside a couple of practice rounds, the golfers said they don’t play together away from the Two-Woman Championship.

“This is the only time we really play together,” Evenson said. “We see each other at some other SDGA events if we both are playing.

“We’ll be playing in this (together) for a while.”

Although the team’s 7-under par score was impressive, it couldn’t beat last year’s performance from the two when they finished the event with a 13-under par score at the Golf Club at Red Rock in Rapid City.

“Last year, we just went out and went crazy at Red Rock,” Coluccio said. “We couldn’t have played any better.”

The two said their victory was truly a team effort with each player doing their part.

“We both hit good shots at the right time,” Evenson said. “Neither of us played really bad, neither of us played really good, but we partner really well.”

The two days of the tournament are set up with different styles, with the field playing four-ball on day one and chapman on day two. Four-ball has both players playing their own shot with two groups teeing off together. The lower score among partners is what is recorded.

In Chapman, both players tee off and each player hits their teammate’s ball for the second shot. The pair picks which ball they will take after each has hit the second shot and alternate shots until making it in the cup.

The tournament also awards a low-net championship based on handicaps. That title went to Ruthie and Jessica Moore, of Scotland, with a tournament score of 136.
