Clear Lake's Bartling throws three-hit shutout in win over Dell Rapids Mudcats

Clear Lake upset the Dell Rapids Mudcats 2-0 in the opening round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Clear Lake upset the Dell Rapids Mudcats 2-0 in the opening round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Ben Bartling pitched a three-hit shutout for Clear Lake. He had three strikeouts.

The Mudcats were the top-ranked team in Class B in the final amateur baseball polls.

“We don’t pay a lot of attention to the polls,” Dell Rapids manager Jim Wilber said. “We lost games throughout the year and we knew we had a challenge.

“I just give all the credit in the world to Ben Bartling. He pitched one heck of a game.”

Matt Wilber took the loss for Dell Rapids. He allowed two runs — one earned — in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up six hits and struck out six.

Nick Salanoa and Nathan Drake each had two hits for Clear Lake in the game. Clear Lake takes on Britton at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Madison 5, Redfield Dairy Queen 2

Madison defeated Redfield Dairy Queen 5-2 in 12 innings early Thursday morning to advance in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament in Mitchell.

Redfield scored two runs in the ninth inning to extend the game but was unable to rally back after Madison scored three in the 12th.

Scott Hoiten picked up the win for Madison. Throwing five innings in relief of Mitch McNary. McNary threw seven shutout innings while Hoiten allowed one earned run on four hits.

Keith Gall threw the first 11 innings for Redfield, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out nine. Brendon Hoellein suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs on three hits and one walk in one inning.

Madison plays Wynot, Neb., at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell.

Lennox 8, Miller/Wessington 2

Chad Reilly allowed two unearned runs in eight innings of work to pick up the win as Lennox defeated Miller/Wessington 8-2 Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Landon Danelson had two home runs and four RBIs to lead Lennox offensively. Matt Storo was 4-for-5.

Lennox advances in the state tournament and takes on Salem at 6 p.m. Monday in Mitchell.
