Class B state tourney kicks off at Cadwell; rain delay, extra innings make for long opening day

Scott Heimes recorded an RBI single to left field in the 11th inning to give Wynot, Neb., a 2-1 win over Colman in the opening game of the South Dakota Class B amateur baseball state tournament Wednesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
The teams were scoreless early in the game when an extended rain delay forced the stoppage of play.
Colman scored the first run of the game when play resumed, but Wynot was able to tie it at 1 in the eighth before eventually winning in 11.
Brett Wiebelhaus was the winning pitcher for Wynot, allowing one run in 10 innings.
Colman outhit Wynot 6-5 but was unable to capitalize on the hits and three Wynot errors.
Wynot advances to take on the Madison at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Madison 5, Redfield Dairy Queen 2 (12 innings)
Redfield Dairy Queen put up two runs in the bottom of the ninth to get to extra innings but eventually fell 5-2 to Madison in the first round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
The game was originally scheduled for an 8 p.m. start on Wednesday, but with the extensive rain delay and an extra-inning contest in the first game got a late start and the final out was recorded at 2:58 a.m. on Thursday.
