SCOTLAND — State Rep. Frank Kloucek, a Democrat from Scotland, has announced his candidacy for District 19 state Senate.

A legislator for more than 22 years, Kloucek describes himself as an advocate for family farms, small towns and constituents.

“We need a state senator who always puts the people first, who is not a quitter and can handle the stress of the job,” Kloucek said in a news release. “By working across party lines and taking on the tough issues, I will continue to help my constituents to the best of my ability as a state senator.”

Kloucek has won awards including the South Dakota Pharmacy Association Distinguished Service Award: Contribution to Profession by a Non Pharmacist; the American Corn Growers’ Friend of The Farmer Award; South Dakota Farmers Union Legislative Award; and The Antidote Newsletter 2012 Voice of the People award.

He has served as vice chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, among other leadership positions in the Legislature.

Kloucek is a third-generation livestock and grain farmer near Scotland. He and his wife, Joanie, have four children: Jennifer, Michelle, Kimberly and Jared.

Kloucek’s opponent in the Nov. 6 general election is Bill Van Gerpen, of Tyndall, a former legislator who served a total of eight years in the state House.
