Sports briefs 8/1: Registration open for Mitchell fall youth football and soccer

The Mitchell Parks & Recreation Department is now taking registration for its fall youth football and soccer programs.

The Mitchell Parks & Recreation Department is now taking registration for its fall youth football and soccer programs.

Programs include third- and fourth-grade flag football, fifth- and sixth-grade tackle football and kindergarten through sixth-grade soccer. Volunteer coaches are needed for football programs.

Registration can be completed online at cityofmitchell.org or at the Mitchell Recreation Center.

Mitchell fall activities meeting set for Thursday

The fall activities meeting for Mitchell School District will be held at the Mitchell High School Auditorium at 7 p.m Thursday.

All students who plan on participating in activities sponsored by the Mitchell School District this year should attend, along with their parents. If students have their current purple physical form completed, they should bring it with them to the meeting.

Several fall activities will be holding their organizational meeting immediately following the large group meeting. The MHS auditorium is located on the south end of Mitchell Senior High School.

Lil’ Kernel Camp location changed

The Lil’ Kernel Volleyball Camp for grades 3-6 will move from the Mitchell High School to the Mitchell Middle School gym because the gym floor at MHS is not completed.

The camp will be held Monday and Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Mudcats pick up Nick Young for state tourney

The District 5B champion Parkston Mudcats picked up Nick Young from Mount Vernon for the state amateur baseball tournament.

Each of the four District 5B representatives got one selection from a non-state-qualifying team.

Alexandria picked up Mount Vernon’s Brett Young, Dimock/Emery picked up Platte’s Hayden Kuiper and the Parkston Rock Bass picked up Platte’s Audie Kuipers.

Old Timers game for today canceled

The annual Old Timers game held in conjunction with the State Amateur Baseball Tournament has been canceled due to the heat and low response.

The game was previously scheduled for this afternoon.

Meyer having heart pacemaker surgery today

ABERDEEN (AP) — Former Northern State University men’s basketball coach Don Meyer is having surgery today to implant a heart pacemaker.

University officials tell the Associated Press that Meyer had heart problems Sunday night, leading to the decision.

Gold loses two to Brandon Valley

The Mitchell Gold teener baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Brandon Valley Tuesday at Drake Field in Mitchell.

Gold lost the first game 12-0 and dropped the second game 8-6.

Aaron Sudbeck was the losing pitcher in the first game and Dylanger Pierson took the loss in the second game. No other stats were reported.

Gold (21-31) plays Thursday in Watertown in its next action. The doubleheader starts at 5 p.m.
