Parkston finishes fourth at state teener tournament

MOUNT VERNON — Alex Scott had four hits and Wes Genant had three in Parkston’s 15-14 loss to Volga in the third-place game of the VFW junior varsity 13-14 Class B state tournament Sunday.

MOUNT VERNON — Alex Scott had four hits and Wes Genant had three in Parkston’s 15-14 loss to Volga in the third-place game of the VFW junior varsity 13-14 Class B state tournament Sunday.

Blake Bietz, Dillan Thuringer and Kellen Culbert each had two hits and Josh Rands took the loss after throwing 1 1/3 innings.

Parkston trailed 9-1 after three innings but battled back to put the potential game-winning run on first base in the top of the seventh.

Parkston won its first-round game over Selby/Eureka Friday, but lost to Garretson 2-1 Saturday in the semifinals.

Gregory 11, Selby/Eureka 1 (Six innings)

MOUNT VERNON — Robert Vomacka threw a complete-game four-hitter to lead Gregory past Selby/Eureka 11-1 Sunday.

Vomacka allowed one run and struck out eight.

The game ended early on the 10-run rule, and Joesph Veskrna had three hits with two doubles. Jayd VanDerWerff had two hits. Selby/Eureka’s Brody Niewsma took the loss on the mound, throwing three innings and allowing four earned runs. He struck out three.

Garretson 2, Parkston 1

MOUNT VERNON — Parkston’s Alex Scott, Josh Rands and Blake Bietz each had two hits in a 2-1 loss to Garretson in the semifinals Saturday.

Scott took the loss on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out five.

Cole Fiegen was the winning pitcher, throwing 5 2/3 innings.

Garretson 12, Alcester 6

MOUNT VERNON — Garretson had four hitters collect multiple hits as the team went on to a 12-6 win in the state championship game against Alcester Sunday in Mount Vernon.

Jacob Fitzgerald pitched four innings for the win and was helped out by three hits from Micah Madder, Brady Schleuter and Jarod Fitzgerald while Sean Tillma added two.

Mitch Johnson suffered the loss on the mound for Alcester. Johnson had two hits at the plate. Grant Johnson and Justin Negaard also had two hits.

Alcester 6, Volga 2

MOUNT VERNON — Porter Hummel threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead Alcester into the state championship game.

Hummel struck out six in the win, and Volga’s Trevor Olson took the loss.

Gregory 13, Canova 9

MOUNT VERNON — Joe Veskrna had four singles to lead Gregory past Canova in a second-round consolation game Saturday.

Robert Vomacka had three hits and Brandon Warnke picked up the win.

Warnke threw 5 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, nine runs and he struck out four.

Jesse Muth took the loss for Canova, which was knocked out of the tournament. Muth allowed seven hits and nine earned runs.

Tanner Miller had two singles for Canova.

Selby/Eureka 7,

Mount Vernon 3

MOUNT VERNON — Sheldon Kelly and Tate Deinert each had two singles in Mount Vernon’s 7-3 loss to Selby/Eureka Saturday.

Mount Vernon was knocked out of the tournament with its second loss in as many days.

Joe Davis threw four innings for Mount Vernon, striking out four and allowing five runs.

Micah Hoellein threw 5 1/3 innings for Selby/Eureka.
