Parkston teeners headed to semifinals at state tourney

MOUNT VERNON — Wes Genant struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings to help lead Parkston to a 6-5 win over Selby/Eureka in the first round of the Class B junior varsity teener baseball state tournament Friday.

MOUNT VERNON — Wes Genant struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings to help lead Parkston to a 6-5 win over Selby/Eureka in the first round of the Class B junior varsity teener baseball state tournament Friday.

Genant picked up the win on the mound and Alex Scott struck out his only batter faced to record the save.

Blake Bietz and Josh Rands each had two hits, including a double, for Parkston, which also got two hits from Scott. Genant had a double at the plate.

John Begeman took the loss on the mound, throwing four innings. Elijah Bohle had two hits for Selby/Eureka.

Parkston advanced to the semifinals where it will take on Garretson at 8 p.m. today in Mount Vernon.

Selby/Eureka takes on Mount Vernon on the consolation side of the bracket at 2:30 p.m. today in Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON — Garretson defeated Mount Vernon 13-1 in five innings in the first round of the junior varsity teener baseball tournament Friday in Mount Vernon.

Owen London suffered the loss on the mound, striking out six in four innings.

Cole Sonne and Drew Olinger each had hits for Mount Vernon and Tate Deinert scored Mount Vernon’s lone run.

Jacob Fitzgerald was the winning pitcher for Garretson. He had five strikeouts in four innings.

Micah Mader and Brady Schleuter both went 4-for-4 in the game. Mader scored four runs and Schleuter had two doubles and three runs scored. Fitzgerald went 2-for-2.

Mount Vernon fell to the consolation side of the bracket, where it faces Selby/Eureka at 2:30 p.m. today in Mount Vernon.

Garretson takes on Parkston at 8 p.m. today in the semifinals in Mount Vernon.

Alcester 6, Canova 3

MOUNT VERNON — Alcester defeated Canova 6-3 in the first round of the junior varsity teener baseball state tournament Friday in Mount Vernon.

Grant Johnson picked up the win with five strikeouts in seven innings.

Justin Negaard and Zach Ronning both had two hits for Alcester. Negaard had a triple in the game.

Jordan Genzlinger was the losing pitcher for Canova. He gave up six hits and struck out eight in six innings.

Cole Gassman, Jesse Muth and Aiden Feldhaus all recorded one hit for Canova.

Alcester takes on Volga at 5:30 p.m. today in Mount Vernon in the semifinals.

Canova faces Gregory at noon today in the consolation side of the bracket.

Volga 18, Gregory 12

MOUNT VERNON — In a back-and-forth game, Volga eventually came out on top and defeated Gregory 18-12 in the first round of the junior varsity teener state tournament Friday in Mount Vernon.

Collin Kramer was the winning pitcher for Volga, which got three hits from Zack Puetz and Cole Gross and two hits from Matt Larson, Nick Strasburg and Brock Suartos.

Sean Kafka suffered the loss on the mound for Gregory.

Robert Vomacka got the start for Gregory, striking out 10 in four innings. Vomacka also recorded three hits including a grand-slam homerun.

Joseph Veskma and Matt Campbell also had three hits for Gregory while Kefka and Andy McCance each had two.

Volga takes on Alcester in the semifinal game at 5:30 p.m. today in Mount Vernon.

Gregory takes on Canova at noon today in Mount Vernon.
