SIOUX FALLS (AP) — South Dakota taxpayers paid almost $380,000 to defend an anti-abortion law that was upheld by a federal appeals court this week.
The amount is much less than some opponents of the law predicted when the South Dakota Legislature approved the so-called "informed consent" law seven years ago.
At the time, estimates of the cost of defending the law ran to $1 million or more.
The law says a doctor must tell a woman who's seeking an abortion that she could be putting herself at greater risk for suicide.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley's office says taxpayers paid more than $377,000 defending the law.
The media reports some private contributors also helped pay the bill.
