Area transit services get grants to replace buses

People in the Mitchell, Bonesteel and Gregory areas are among those who will benefit from nine federal transportation grants that will be sent to South Dakota.

Palace Transit in Mitchell will receive $240,000 to replace buses in its fleet that have met or exceeded their useful lives.

Rural Office of Community Services (ROCS) Transit in Lake Andes, a provider of rural transit services, will receive $152,000 to replace vehicles in the cities of Bonesteel and Gregory that have met or exceeded their useful life.

The total funding for all South Dakota recipients, announced Tuesday, is $3.5 million. “This funding will make it possible for bus systems across South Dakota to make much-needed improvements to their vehicles and facilities,” said Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., in a news release.

“There is growing demand for public transit in our state, and as chairman one of my top priorities is investing in these systems.”

Johnson is chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over the nation’s public transportation systems.
