Region 2A’s top-seeded Sioux Falls West avoided a major upset Tuesday in a second-round tournament game victory against Valley Springs, the fifth seed, at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
West scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally from a five-run deficit for a 10-9 walk-off win. Trevor Hurley had the single down the left-field line to score two runs for the final play of the game. West celebrated on the field by mobbing Hurley after he rounded second base.
“It’s one of the craziest games I’ve ever been a part of in a region tournament,” West coach Joel Sage said. “Trevor has been swinging the bat pretty well the last few games.”
Hurley had a single and a double in the game for West, which had four hits and three walks in the final inning. West’s lone out in the bottom of the ninth came on a sacrifice fly.
Jack Lund was the winning pitcher for West, recording only one out.
Valley Springs, which beat Yankton 6-5 in a first-round game, scored three runs in the eighth and ninth innings for a 9-4 lead. Offensively, Trevor Crow had two singles and a double for Valley Springs. Jacob Adams had a home run and two singles.
West (36-19) plays Sioux Falls East (32-17) at 1 p.m. today for a spot in the Region 2A championship game.
