CANTON (AP) — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the attempted bombing of a residence in Canton.

Harley Ellis says he found the homemade device with jugs of gasoline and gunpowder connected to battery wires and a timer on the back step of his trailer on the morning of July 8.

When he saw the timer wasn't moving, he thought about picking it up and throwing it away, but decided to call police.

The ATF says the device failed to function as designed but was live.

The federal agency asks that anyone with information call the ATF Sioux Falls field office at (605) 782-8200, or the Canton Police Department at (605) 987-5612.
