RAPID CITY (AP) — Two Washington state men who were caught with what they claimed was medicinal marijuana and hashish have been fined and sentenced to probation in South Dakota.

The media reports that 38-year-old Jude Boda and 42-year-old Timothy Dyck were stopped in February by a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper while the men were en route to Ohio.

Authorities say men had more than two ounces of marijuana and hashish in their possession.

Circuit Judge Jeff Davis fined each man $2,500 and placed them on probation for two years.

Their attorney, Matthew Kinney of Spearfish, told the judge that the men were coming from states where medicinal marijuana was legal. He says many people are not aware of the differences in the drug laws from state to state.
