Gregory, Parkston qualify for 13-14 VFW state tournament

GREGORY — The Parkston and Gregory 13-14 teener baseball teams both qualified for the VFW state tournament over the weekend. They each played in the Region 4B tournament.

GREGORY — The Parkston and Gregory 13-14 teener baseball teams both qualified for the VFW state tournament over the weekend. They each played in the Region 4B tournament.

Gregory defeated Parkston in the championship game 13-1 Saturday, but two teams from the region qualified.

Brandon Warnke was the winning pitcher for Gregory in the title game. Five Gregory players had multiple hits, including Warnke, Jayd Vanderwerf, Seth Pistulka and Joesph Baskrana, who each had two singles. Matt Campbell added three singles and Robert Vamacha had a triple.

Drew Kurtz was the losing pitcher for Parkston, which had two hits in the game. Alex Wolf and Kylor Holzbauer each had a hit.

On Friday, Parkston defeated Colome 5-3. Alex Scott was the winning pitcher, throwing all seven innings and allowing four hits and striking out five.

Blake Bietz and Holzbauer each had two hits. No stats were reported for Colome.

Later in the day Friday, Parkston defeated Gregory 3-1.

Wes Genant was the winning pitcher, throwing sevn innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

Four Parkston players had one hit apiece.

Vanderwerf was the losing pitcher for Gregory, which had four hits at the plate.

Parkston (18-8) plays Selby-Eureka at 5:30 p.m. in its first-round state tournament game, which starts Friday in Mount Vernon. Gregory plays Volga at 2:30 p.m. in Mount Vernon.

Other teams that qualified for the state tournament are Mount Vernon, Canova, Garretson and Alcester. The matchups for those teams were not available when this edition went to press.
