Mitchell Black takes third at Midsummer Shootout tourney

SIOUX FALLS — Jed Schmidt had an inside-the-park home run and hit for the cycle to pace Mitchell Black to a 15-2 win over Brandon Valley in the third-place game of the Midsummer Shootout teener baseball tournament Sunday in Sioux Falls.

Overall, Schmidt had five hits on the day, including two singles, a double, a triple and the home run.

Mitchell had 18 hits, getting two each from Reed Overweg, Myles Szabo and Koln Thie. Tucker Kingsbury added a double.

Kingsbury was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and striking out five while walking five.

In games Saturday, Mitchell lost 11-3 to Brandon Valley and beat Sioux Falls East 15-7.

In the loss to Brandon, Mitchell Price was the losing pitcher. He threw one inning, allowing two hits, before leaving with an injury. Devin Mehlhaff relieved, giving up six hits while striking out two.

Kingsbury had two hits for Mitchell and Parker Wenzel had a triple.

In the win over East, Parker Wenzel was the starting pitcher but couldn’t get out of the first inning, allowing six runs on three hits and five walks. Schmidt relieved and didn’t allow a hit the remainder of the game, striking out eight and walking four.

Josh Feiner had three hits for Mitchell and Overweg and Brandon Krogman both had two.

Mitchell is now 20-22 and plays at Brookings Wednesday.

Mitchell Gold drops three over the weekend

SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell Gold dropped two games Saturday and one Sunday at the Midsummer Shootout teener baseball tournament in Sioux Falls.

Chase Harms recorded two hits in all three games and had five stolen bases in the loss Sunday.

Saturday started with a 14-2 loss to Watertown. Ben Miller was the losing pitcher, giving up 11 runs on eight hits and three walks in four innings. He recorded one strikeout.

In the second game Saturday, Gold fell 11-3 to Huron. Joining Harms with multiple hits included Luke Bartl, Neil Schlimgen and Miller. All finished with two hits. Kanin Nelson suffered the loss on the mound.

In its final game of the tournament, Gold dropped a 6-2 game to Moorhead, Minn. Dylanger Pierson was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in five innings while striking out eight.

Pierson and Schlimgen recorded two hits in the contest.

Gold dropped to 17-28 on the season and takes on Sioux Falls Central at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Drake Field in Mitchell.

Terry Lynde aces Lakeview’s No. 8

In Mitchell for a 30-year class reunion, Terry Lynde recorded a hole-in-one while playing a round of golf Sunday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

Lynde, of Britton, made the 122-yard shot on Hole No. 8 with an 8-iron. The ace was the first ever for Lynde.

Mitchell White finishes runner-up at Midsummer Shootout tourney

SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell White teener baseball team fell 9-4 in the championship game at the Midsummer Shootout teener baseball tournament Sunday in Sioux Falls.

Spencer Neugebauer suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs in six innings.

Sam Michels went 2-for-4 with a triple and two stolen bases while Ryland DeVries had two stolen bases and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Mitchell White earned a spot in the championship game with an 8-0 win over Aberdeen Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Michels threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts in the win.

Matt Muth went 4-for-4 against Aberdeen with two doubles and two runs scored. Neugebauer and Michels each had two hits including a double in the game.

Mitchell White (19-12) returns to the diamond to take on Sioux Falls West in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Sioux Falls.

Corsica, McCook, Winner/Colome qualify for state B Legion tourney

The Corsica, McCook Miners and Winner/Colome Legion baseball teams all qualified for the Class B state Legion baseball tournament, which starts Friday in Milbank.

The double-elimination tournament starts with McCook playing Flandreau at 10 a.m. In the next game, Corsica plays Vermillion 30 minutes following the first game.

Webster plays Winner/Colome at 5 p.m. in another first-round matchup and Groton plays Milbank 30 minutes following.

Corsica claimed the Region 4B title to qualify, McCook won Region 5B and Winner/Colome won Region 7B.

The tournament concludes July 31.

Mitchell Gray loses three games

SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell Gray dropped three games in the Mid-Summer Shootout over the weekend, held at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls. Gray lost to Brandon Valley, 12-1 and Sioux Falls West, 12-0 Saturday and dropped an 11-4 decision to Sioux Falls East Sunday.

Against Brandon Valley, Mitchell Gray’s Logan Kurtenbach took the loss, throwing four innings, allowing four runs and four walks. Carter Thompson finished the game on the mound.

Offensively, Spencer More had the team’s only hit and drove in its only run in the game that was shortened to five innings.

Against Sioux Falls West, Mitchell Gray was held again to only one hit, coming from Wyatt Smith. Woodall threw all five innings of the shortened game, with one strikeout and two walks.

Sunday’s finale against Sioux Falls East was led by a 3-for-3 performance from Kyle Woodall at the plate, driving in two runs. Wyatt Smith was 2-for-3 at the plate and Austin Eidall went 1-for-1 with a base on balls. Spencer Mohr and Carter Thompson each had RBIs for Gray in the loss.

Smith took the loss, pitching the first four innings.

Mitchell Gray (3-23) hosts a doubleheader against Brookings Tuesday, with games at 5 and 7 p.m.
