GLAD YOU ASKED: New one-way street paint could confuse

Q: Since the one-way-street controversy has been put to rest, I note the city’s street department has painted arrows at some of the intersections of the affected streets — a well-appreciated effort. As a resident I have no question of the meaning of these arrows; however, if I were in a town I was not accustomed to, I may have second thoughts. Does this mean I should only go straight ahead, or do I have the option of turning right or left?

I hope there’s a chance the city could add to the existing arrows a curved one indicating the possibility of turning — maybe even the locals will move to the lane they wish to turn instead of making it from the middle of the street.

A: Drivers are still allowed to make right or left turns at the intersections, said Public Works Director Tim McGannon.

The arrows were placed on the streets to provide a further caution to drivers, McGannon said Friday.

“I think that’s just to alert traffic they’re going the wrong way,” he said. “They can still turn. Just wanted to give people another heads-up this is one-way.”

McGannon said he doesn’t believe there are any discussions under way of adding a curved arrow to the streets, but said Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg, who is also the chairman of the city’s Traffic Commission, could decide to push for them later.
