The fire in southwest South Dakota was reported early Thursday afternoon, starting about a mile east of Pringle. As of Friday afternoon, firefighters list it at 5 percent contained. About 300 firefighters are on scene.
Wind Cave National Park has been closed indefinitely, and a Type 1 fire team is scheduled to begin battling the blaze sometime Friday.
"Right now we are concerned about the area south of 385 and Pringle," said Mike Carter, Emergency Coordinator for Custer County. "We have no concerns about Custer."
The American Red Cross has opened an emergency evacuation center at the Armory/Custer Middle School.
