PIERRE — Mitchell Post 18 split a Legion baseball doubleheader with Pierre Wednesday in Pierre, taking the first game 7-5 before falling 5-4 in the nightcap.

Michael Sadler allowed five runs in the opening inning of play, but bounced back with six scoreless innings in the game one win.

“He didn’t look like himself in the first inning,” coach Luke Norden said. “After the first inning he settled down so there was no need to go to the bullpen.”

Sadler allowed five hits and struck out five in the game. He also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Josh Schmidt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the game and Alex Herrick drove in one and finished the game 2-for-3.

Post 18 led 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth in the second game, but a four-run inning put Pierre up and the game ended with Mitchell losing 5-4.

“We missed some opportunities to score,” Norden said. “We got a couple big hits but we needed a couple more.”

Jared Schmidt was 3-for-4 in the second game and Evan Mastel was stuck with the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in six innings.

“Hopefully we learned something from (the loss),” Norden said. “We’ve got to play a little better to finish games.”

Mitchell (30-19) returns to the diamond to take on Rapid City Post 320 at 4 p.m. Friday at Drake Field in Mitchell.
