Post 18 finishes with 3-2 record at Gopher Classic

ELKO, Minn. — After winning a pair of Friday games at the Gopher Classic Legion baseball tournament, Mitchell Legion Post 18 went 1-2 Saturday and Sunday.
Mitchell lost to Hopkins, Minn., 6-0 Saturday, beat the Rochester (Minn.) A’s 2-1 Sunday morning and fell to Lakeville North 13-5 Sunday afternoon.
“Lakeville and Hopkins were two of the better teams we’ve played this year,” said Mitchell coach Luke Norden, whose team went 3-2 overall at the Gopher Classic and now is 29-18. “We finished the summer with a 13-1 record when we played Friday and Saturday in tournaments. I’m very pleased with our effort this year in tournaments.”
Mitchell’s Matt Larson recorded a complete game on the mound in the loss to Hopkins. He allowed five earned runs, eight hits and he struck out one.
Post 18 had three hits in the game. Lakin Neugebauer, Seth Cavanaugh and Derek Miller each had a single.
Kirby Fuerst also pitched a complete game but got the win against Rochester. He allowed seven hits and struck out four.
Offensively, Mitchell had five hits. Michael Sadler was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Evan Mastel and Josh Schmidt each had a single and Cavanaugh had an RBI single.
Miller took the loss in the game against Lakeville North, throwing four-plus innings. He allowed five runs, four were earned, nine hits and he struck out one.
Mitchell had nine hits at the plate. Jared Schmidt was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Cavanaugh was 1-for-1 with a double, Fuerst had an RBI double and Jacob Rice was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Post 18 is in action next at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Pierre.
