Sports briefs 7/16: Wessington Springs wins two amateur games

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Wessington Springs amateur baseball team won two of three games over the weekend.

Saturday, the Owls lost to the Redfield Pheasants 8-5 and defeated Redfield Dairy Queen 8-7. Sunday, Wessington Springs beat Chamberlain 3-1.

Josh Hoffmann was the losing pitcher for Wessington Springs against the Pheasants.

Offensively, Wessington Springs’ Nathan Hainy had three hits, Logan Kopfmann and Brian Kolousek each had a single.

Mitch McLagan earned the win for Wessington Springs against Dairy Queen.

Adam Kaus, Arin Boschee, Hoffmann and Jay Fischer had two hits each.

Kaus was the winning pitcher against Chamberlain.

Offensively, Kopfmann had two hits and Hainy, Kolousek and Fischer each had one hit.

No stats were reported for Chamberlain.

Wessington Springs (15-8) plays Tuesday at Pierre in a non-league game.

Parkston Rock Bass beat Parkston Bullheads 2-0

PARKSTON — The Parkston Rock Bass finished their regular season Sunday with a 2-0 win over the Parkston Bullheads.

The Rock Bass’ Derik Bialas picked up the win, throwing six innings. He walked four, gave up three hits and struck out five. Tom Murtha earned the save, pitching the final three innings. He gave up one hit and struck out five.

Offensively, Sterling Kinneberg was 2-for-4, Jared Weber was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Eric Maeschen was 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.

The Bullheads finished with four hits as a team.

The Rock Bass (10-6) play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Mount Vernon in the first round of the District 5B tournament in Parkston. The Bullheads play the Parkston Mudcats in another first-round district tournament game immediately after the Rock Bass and Mount Vernon play.

Teener Gold falls to Aberdeen in doubleheader

ABERDEEN — The Mitchell Gold teener baseball team was swept in a doubleheader Sunday against Aberdeen.

Mitchell lost the first game 11-1 and lost the second game 12-6.

Dylanger Pierson took the loss in the first game, throwing 3 1/3 innings and allowing eight runs on 10 hits. He struck out three batters.

Offensively, Pierson, Mitch Johnson, Aaron Sudbeck and Neil Schlimgen each had one hit.

In the second game, Luke Bartl took the loss. He threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs, five hits, eight walks and he struck out two.

Johnson and Chase Harms each had two singles and Pierson and Schlimgen each had a double and a single.

Mitchell (16-22) plays at Pierre today in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m.

Mitchell Black splits with Huron

HURON — Mitchell Price had three hits and pitched a complete-game four-hitter to pace Mitchell Black to a 7-2 win over Huron in the opening game of a teener baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

Huron came back to win the second game, 4-1, and the split keeps Mitchell’s season record even, at 18-18. Huron is now 14-7.

Price allowed four hits and five walks while striking out four in the victory. Offensively, his three singles paced Mitchell, which had nine hits overall. Reed Overweg and Jed Schmidt both had two hits and Tucker Kingsbury and Parker Wenzel both had a double each.

In Game 2, Devin Mehlhaff was the losing pitcher, throwing a complete game. He allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four.

Mitchell, which was limited to two hits in the second game, is on the road Tuesday to play Sioux Falls East.

Sher Mueller hits hole-in-one

Sher Mueller, Mitchell, hit her first-ever hole-in-one Saturday.

Mueller aced Lakeview’s No. 3 hole at 122 yards with a 6 iron.

Tabor Legion beats Crofton, Neb. 14-1

CROFTON, Neb. — Tabor ended its regular season Sunday night with a 14-1 mercy-rule win over Crofton, Neb.

Tabor’s Blase Vanacek, Lance Ranek and Nate Kloucek each pitched in the game. Vanacek earned the win, but the three combined to allow three hits and struck out eight.

Mike Kocer had three singles and a double, Ranek had three singles and the team finished with 15 hits total.

Tabor (15-1) plays Corsica at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Corsica for the region 4B tournament.
