Four Kernel football players to play in all-star game

Jason and Justin Greenway, Dylan Hart and Dalton Wangerin are getting to enjoy the high school football experience one last time.

The Mitchell High School graduates helped the Kernels to an 8-3 record last season and they’re all moving on this fall to play collegiately. Before that happens, the four Kernels will participate in the South Dakota All-Star football game, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Aberdeen.

All of the Mitchell players are on the North team.

“Everyone has missed playing,” said Justin Greenway, who is headed to Augustana College in Sioux Falls with his twin brother, Jason. “We’ve been talking about playing in this game all week. We have one more high school football game. … It’s nice to see all the Mitchell guys on the roster.”

The annual all-star games feature senior athletes who graduated in the spring. On Tuesday, there will be girls’ and boys’ basketball games, while Wednesday will have football and volleyball games.

Dalton Wangerin is going to Northern State University for college football. The all-star game is being held on NSU’s home field, Clark Swisher Activities Complex.

Wangerin was Mitchell’s long snapper and also played offensive and defensive line. He’s headed to Northern State as a defensive end.

“I’m excited to do this,” he said. “It’s a nice closure to my high school career.”

Hart is headed to Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington, Minn., to play linebacker. Jason Greenway, like his brother, is listed as a running back, wide receiver and kick returner for Augustana.

Hart and Jason Greenway could not be reached for this report.

Other plays in the Mitchell area who are on the North team are Bon Homme’s Charlie Bentzen; Winner’s Taylor Haley; Ethan’s Kendall Lindeman; Platte-Geddes’ Dillon Werkmeister; and Parkston’s Austin Wolf.

Players in the Mitchell area playing the South team are Hanson’s Jordan Craig; Canistota’s Troy Hofer and Trevor Schroeder; Wessington Springs’ Trevor Kenobbie; Montrose’s Chris Mathieu and Jordan Wolf; and Avon’s Jackson Powers.

Two Mitchell players are playing for the South volleyball team: Dana Misiaszek and Lexie Weier. Other players from the area on the same team are Bon Homme’s Kayli Adams; Gregory’s Taylor Anshutz, Wagner’s Alexa Cimpl; McCook Central’s Stephanie Heumiller; and Hanson’s Ashley Robinson.

Mitchell’s Jade Miller confirmed he will be playing for the all-star boys’ basketball team.
