Mitchell White sweeps Aberdeen

The Mitchell White teener baseball team swept Aberdeen in a doubleheader Thursday evening at Drake Field in Mitchell.

White took the first game 14-6 and won the second game 13-0 in five innings on the 10-run rule.

Spencer Neugebauer picked up the win in the first game, throwing four innings and allowing two hits and two runs. Neugebauer also had two RBIs at the plate with a double and two runs scored.

Sam Michels had two singles and scored three runs and Ross Yeo had a double and a run scored.

Elijah Pommar threw a complete-game one-hitter in the second game. The only base runner he allowed was a single in the fourth inning.

Offensively for Mitchell, Michels had two singles and an RBI, Neugebauer had two singles and two RBIs and Wyatt Smith had a double and a run scored.

White (15-11) plays Aberdeen in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday in Aberdeen.

Renken leads Mount Vernon past Ethan 16-1

MOUNT VERNON — Cody Renken pitched two scoreless innings, hit a home run and a double to lead the Mount Vernon 15-16-year-old teener team past Ethan 16-1 Thursday night.

Mount Vernon’s Charlie Mahaffey was the winning pitcher, throwing two innings and striking out four. He walked one and gave up one single.

Mahaffey had two singles, Deric Denning had a triple and a single and Bryce Erickson had had two singles for Mount Vernon, which is now 16-2.

The losing pitcher was Jace Connor, who threw all four innings. He struck out three.

The Mount Vernon 13-14-year-old team defeated Ethan 11-2 in the first game of the night.

Teener Gray drops doubleheader

YANKTON — The Mitchell Gray teener baseball team fell to Yankton on Tuesday in a doubleheader in Yankton.

Mitchell lost the first game 12-10 and lost the second game 15-0.

In the first game, Tim Morgan was the losing pitcher for Mitchell. He pitched three innings and gave up two runs.

Offensively for Mitchell, Wyatt Smith went 4-for-4 and Matt Muth went 3-for-4.

In the second game, Ryland DeVries took the loss for Mitchell. He pitched three innings and gave up 10 runs.

Mitchell is 2-17 and is back in action Tuesday when it takes on Brookings in Brookings for a doubleheader. Game times are set for noon and 2 p.m.

Twins bring Capps back from DL

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins will reinstate closer Matt Capps from the 15-day disabled list.

The Twins announced Thursday that Capps will return for today’s game against Oakland. He has been out for three weeks due to shoulder inflammation.

To make room on the roster, the Twins optioned right-handed reliever Kyle Waldrop back to Triple-A Rochester.

Capps pitched two innings on a rehab assignment with Class A Fort Myers, giving up one hit, one unearned run and striking out one. Waldrop gave up two earned runs, seven hits and three walks in four innings while striking out one.

The Twins also set their post-All-Star break rotation Thursday, with Francisco Liriano, then Cole De Vries and Brian Duensing starting this weekend against the A’s. Scott Diamond and Sam Deduno will follow next week.

NDSU fans latch on to USD ticket promotion

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A number of North Dakota State University football fans have tickets to a game between Colgate and South Dakota, thanks to an unusual two-game ticket promotion.

USD officials are worried that NDSU fans could fill up Howard Wood Stadium in Sioux Falls for a Coyotes-Bison matchup on Oct. 20, so they offered a promotion where Coyotes fans could get tickets to that game and the Colgate game for $35.

The Forum newspaper reports that NDSU fans also are taking advantage of the promotion. USD officials didn’t intend for that to happen, but ticket operations coordinator Brad Simons says, “if it happens, it happens.”

He says some Bison fans have expressed a willingness to donate the Colgate tickets back to USD.

Wolves waive Milicic, advance pursuit of Batum

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have waived center Darko Milicic and submitted a formal offer sheet in an attempt to sign Portland forward Nicolas Batum.

Milicic received the amnesty designation Thursday, a one-time provision allowing a team to let a player go without his remaining contract counting against the league’s salary cap or luxury tax.

Owner Glen Taylor said the team expected Batum to sign the offer Thursday. Taylor also said the Wolves would continue to talk about a sign-and-trade option for acquiring the restricted free agent.

Batum’s agent said last week he and the Wolves agreed to terms on a four-year, $45 million deal with bonuses that could push the value past $50 million. Blazers general manager Neil Olshey said Wednesday he’ll match any offers for Batum.
