Sabers, Weber win junior golf tour event

HARRISBURG — Sydney Weber, of Parkston, and Kristin Sabers, of Mitchell, claimed titles Monday at the First Dakota National Bank Junior Tour golf event in Harrisburg.

Sabers carded a 72 to win the 16-18 girls’ division. She was two strokes ahead of Megan Mingo, of Yankton.

Weber also won by a two-stroke margin, shooting an 81 to top Meredith Turner, of Brandon, in the 14-15 girls’ division.

Mitchell Gold splits with Huron

Mitchell Gold avenged a first-game 13-0 loss to Huron with a 9-3 win in the nightcap of a teener baseball doubleheader Monday at Drake Field in Mitchell.

Kanin Nelson had two hits in game one and pitched all seven innings in game two to pick up the win. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out eight.

Dylanger Pierson suffered the loss on the mound in the first game, throwing the entire game. He allowed 10 hits and struck out six.

Pierson had an RBI double in Mitchell Gold’s win and the team had two hits from Mitch Johnson and Chase Harms in that game.

Harms also recorded three stolen bases to help Mitchell’s offense.

The team returns to action today with a doubleheader against Sioux Falls East. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. today at Drake Field in Mitchell.

Mitchell Black goes 1-2 in weekend tourney

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following adds information to a previous report and also clarifies information provided earlier to The Daily Republic.

MOUNT VERNON — Mitchell Black went 1-2 and finished fourth at the Mount Vernon teener baseball tournament over the weekend, culminating the two-day event with a 6-5 loss to Platte in the third-place game.

In Sunday’s third-place game, Platte got three hits from Cole Heller, including a triple. Heller scored three times and Platte had five hits overall. Tate Wagner was the winning pitcher.

Mitchell had six hits, with Parker Wenzel getting two doubles and Austin Getty getting two singles. Tucker Kingsbury was the starting pitcher for Mitchell, throwing four innings. He allowed four hits and struck out three. Andrew Neugebauer pitched two innings in relief and Jed Schmidt pitched one inning. Each struck out one.

In previous games, Mitchell edged unbeaten Mount Vernon in the opening round, 6-5. Schmidt was the winning pitcher, in relief of Mitch Price. Price threw into the third inning, allowing six hits while striking out one. Schmidt pitched the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing two hits while striking out eight.

Price, Kingsbury and Schmidt each had one hit for Mitchell. For Mount Vernon, Charlie Mahaffey, Tate Deinert and Cody Renken all had two hits.

In the second round, Humboldt beat Mitchell 9-2. Brandon Krogman was the losing pitcher, allowing six hits in four innings. He struck out two and walked three. Wenzel relieved, allowing four runs on six hits, with one strikeout. Schmidt had two hits for Mitchell, including a double.

Mitchell is 15-17 and hosts Sioux Falls West at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vavruska strikes out 11 as Tabor edges Menno 5-4

TABOR — Jon Vavruska struck out 11 in a complete-game effort as he helped lead Tabor to a 5-4 win over Menno in amateur baseball action Sunday in Tabor.

The Bluebirds scored five runs on six team hits, including two from Jason Humpal. Brian Supik had a double.

Macon Oplinger was a home run away from the cycle with three runs scored for Menno.

Tabor plays Yankton today in Tabor for the team’s final home game of the season.

Dwyane Wade has surgery on knee

MIAMI (AP) — Dwyane Wade of the NBA champion Miami Heat had surgery Monday on his left knee, and is expected to need up to eight weeks to fully recover.

Wade was bothered by knee pain and swelling throughout the playoffs. He had fluid removed midway through Miami’s second-round series with Indiana and needed treatment several times a week during Miami’s run to the title.

He opted to have the knee surgery early in the offseason in Miami with hopes of being ready for the start of training camp this fall. The surgery forced Wade to withdraw from consideration for the U.S. Olympic team.

Wade played in all 23 Heat playoff games despite the knee problems.

NDSU golfer finishes second at world event

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota State University golfer Amy Anderson had an impressive showing on an international stage.

The 19-year-old from Oxbow finished second at the recent World University Golf Championship in the Czech Republic. She shot 16 under par over four rounds, finishing one stroke behind Spain’s Camila Hedberg Bertrand.

Spain won the 16-team tournament by a tiebreaker over the U.S. squad that also included golfers from Georgia and Michigan State.

Anderson is no stranger to high-profile tournaments. She has made the NCAA Division I women’s golf tournament field three straight years. She also played in the U.S. Women’s Open in 2011.

Canova moves to second spot in Class B ranking

The Canova amateur baseball team moved up to the No. 2 ranking in the latest South Dakota amateur baseball rankings, which were announced Monday.

The Dell Rapids Mudcats sit atop the Class B polls with Crofton, Neb., Redfield and Alexandria finishing off the top five.

The Parkston Mudcats are in sixth in the latest poll and Dimock/Emery holds the eighth spot.

The Renner Monarchs are Class A’s top team and are followed in the rankings by Brandon Valley and Yankton while Sioux Falls and Pierre are tied for the fourth spot.
