Emery man hits hole-in-one at Freeman course

FREEMAN — Scott Schultz, Emery, hit his first-ever hole-in-one Thursday night.

During men’s league at Freeman’s Valley View Golf Course, Schultz aced the 285-yard par 4 fourth hole with a driver.

This is the sixth hole-in-one at Valley View this year.

VanLeur, Pudwill to receive awards

Two area football coaches will be presented awards on July 18 at halftime of the All-Star Football game in Aberdeen.

Griffith VanLeur of Bridgewater/Emery-Ethan will be presented with the Class 9AA 2012 Assistant Coach of the Year award and Byron Pudwill of Bon Homme with presented with a 30 year coaching award.

Other coaches who will be presented with assistant coach of the year awards are as follows: Nathan Lamb of Waverly-South Shore, Class 9B; Wayne Shull of Wall, Class 9A; Dan Snethen of Tri-Valley, Class 11B; Aaron Nida of Spearfish, Class 11A; Josh Siegfried of Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Class 11AA.

The eight-grade and under assistant coach of the year award will be presented to Bob Tiff of Redfield/Doland. Other coaches who will receive 30 year coaching awards are as follows: Brent Mitchelknaus of Irene Wakonda; David Noles of Little Wound. Dana Dykhouse of Sioux Falls will receive the State Friend of Football Award.

Avon gets 5-4 win

AVON— Avon defeated Irene 5-4 Thursday night in amateur baseball action in Avon.

Joe Sees picked up the win for Avon. He pitched a complete game, allowed seven hits, struck out eight and allowed one earned run.

Offensively for Avon, Sees had three hits, Dan Bures had three hits, one home run and three RBIs. Logan Tycz had two hits and one RBI.

Brian Drapuaux took the loss for Irene. He pitched eight innings, allowed 10 hits, struck out nine and allowed five earned runs.

Offensively for Irene, Simon Healy had two hits and one RBI, Brett Mellem had one hit and one RBI and George Sees had one RBI.

Kaul leads Tabor Legion team to win over Corsica

CORSICA — Tabor picked up its 13th win of the year Friday with a 7-4 victory over Corsica in Legion baseball action.

Tabor’s Austin Kaul threw seven innings of one-hit baseball. He had two strike outs and walked two.

Mike Mesman threw the final two innings for Tabor. He allowed four runs in the eighth inning.

Offensively for Tabor, Kaul had two singles.

Dustin Bultje took the loss for Corsica. He threw six innings and gave up four hits and five runs.

Corsica’s Aaron Groeneweg had a three-run homer in the eighth inning.

Tabor (13-1) hosts Elk Point Thursday in its next action.
