Air Force plane crashes battling SD forest fire

EDGEMONT (AP) — An Air Force cargo plane has crashed while fighting a wildfire in southwestern South Dakota, but there's no official word on deaths or injuries.

U.S. Northern Command says the C-130 crashed Sunday. It had been dropping retardant on the 6.5-square-mile White Draw Fire.

Northern Command hasn't released any information on the crew, including how many were aboard or where they were based.

The Fall River County Sheriff's Department told the media that three crew members were taken to a hospital. Northern Command said it couldn't comment.

Eight C-130s can be equipped to drop water or fire retardant. They're flown by Air Force National Guard and Reserve units based in California, Colorado, North Carolina and Wyoming.

All eight were dispatched to Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., last week.
