Sunshine League: Suicide squeeze lifts Mount Vernon in extras
PLATTE — Phil Maulde put down a successful suicide squeeze in the 10th inning to take the lead and Mount Vernon added a couple more and went on to a 6-3 win over Platte in Sunshine League amateur baseball action Sunday in Platte.

PLATTE — Phil Maulde put down a successful suicide squeeze in the 10th inning to take the lead and Mount Vernon added a couple more and went on to a 6-3 win over Platte in Sunshine League amateur baseball action Sunday in Platte.
Maulde’s bunt allowed Sean DeVries to score what wound up to be the game-winning run and gave Chase Hetland the win on the mound. Hetland pitched one inning and allowed one hit.
Brett Young was 2-for-4 for the Cardinals in the win.
Josh Wagner was the losing pitcher for Platte. He pitched all 10 innings for the Killer Tomatoes.
Platte’s next league game is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday against Corsica/Stickney in Platte.
Mount Vernon’s next league contest is against the Parkston Mudcats at 7 p.m. Sunday in Parkston.
PARKSTON ROCK BASS 9,
MITCHELL 5
PARKSTON — The Parkston Rock Bass defeated the Mitchell Mad Dogs 9-5 Sunday in Sunshine League amateur baseball action in Parkston.
Brandon Auch got the win on the mound for Parkston. He allowed five runs on five hits in eight innings and struck out six.
James Boehmer went 2-for-5 with two runs and three stolen bases for the Rock Bass, who improved to 7-5 in the league.
Billy Murtha was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs for Parkston, which also got three hits and two RBIs from Jordan Boehmer.
Tyler Earls closed the gap to two in the eighth for Mitchell with a two-run home run, but the Rock Bass answered back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Jordan Piper was the Mad Dogs’ lone player with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 at the plate. Jamie Huber suffered the loss on the mound.
Mitchell’s next game is set for 8 p.m. Thursday as the Mad Dogs host Canova.
The Rock Bass return to the diamond Wednesday for their annual July 4 matchup with the in-town rival Parkston Mudcats. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Parkston with fireworks after the contest.
