Recycling, Waste Management District gets $483,000 for landfill project

PIERRE — The state Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved a $483,000 grant and loan package for the Southern Missouri Recycling and Waste Management District to construct a new disposal cell at its regional landfill near Lake Andes.

PIERRE — The state Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved a $483,000 grant and loan package for the Southern Missouri Recycling and Waste Management District to construct a new disposal cell at its regional landfill near Lake Andes.

The funding includes a $241,000 grant from the Solid Waste Management Program and a $242,000 low-interest loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program.

“The regional landfill near Lake Andes is nearing capacity at its existing solid waste disposal cell,” said Gov. Dennis Daugaard. “These funds will help Southern Missouri upgrade the regional landfill and provide extra capacity to continue to accept municipal waste.”

The project involves constructing a 2.4-acre, solid-waste disposal cell that will provide sufficient landfill capacity to accept solid waste through 2025. The project also includes constructing a leachate collection system to convey leachate to the landfill’s storage pond and completing the final cover on a cell that is filled to capacity.

The grant and loan will cover the estimated cost of the project. The loan terms are 2.25 percent interest for 10 years.

The Solid Waste Management Program provides grants and loans for solid waste disposal, recycling, and waste tire projects. The Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program provides low-interest loans for wastewater, storm sewer projects, and non-point source pollution abatement projects including water quality protection components associated with landfills.

The board met Thursday and Friday in Pierre.
