Read any hot books lately?

They were all hot for a short time this week at the Mitchell Public Library where indoor temps hit the 80-degree mark briefly during the recent heat wave.

Library Director Jackie Hess placed the blame on a second air conditioning compressor that failed to back up the overloaded main unit when temperatures soared into the mid-90s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We’re OK today,” said Hess on Thursday, “but we’ve put in a call to Arctic Refrigeration.”

After years of complaints about the library’s heating system, the city replaced the library heating system about two years ago. That upgrade did not include new air conditioning units, city Finance Director Marilyn Wilson said.

Wilson said the broken system will be repaired soon.
