Judge lets part of SD abortion law take effect

U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier says the state can enforce provisions requiring that doctors who perform abortions must first assess women to determine if they have been coerced into getting abortions or are at risk of suffering psychological problems if they have an abortion.
However, the judge has continued to block provisions that would require women seeking abortions to wait three days and undergo counseling at centers that discourage abortions. Those provisions will remain blocked until a final decision is made in a legal challenge.
The South Dakota Legislature passed the law last year. After lawmakers made changes this year, opponents dropped objections to provisions dealing with doctor's consultations with women.
