RAPID CITY (AP) — Caskets as well as amputated limbs from a local hospital might be buried in the wrong plots at a city-owned cemetery in Rapid City.
The city is paying an outside firm $10,500 to audit records at the Mountain View/Mount Calvary Cemetery. Nearly 400 burial sites of about 22,000 will be checked this summer.
Mayor Sam Kooiker says at least four cases of caskets being buried in the wrong place have already been identified, dating to the 1950s. He says there also are recent allegations that cemetery workers in the 1980s placed amputated limbs in grave sites prepared for others.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says it is too late to pursue any criminal charges.
