ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria Angels pitcher Trever Vermeulen finished one batter away from a perfect game for the second consecutive start as Alexandria defeated the Mitchell Mad Dogs 10-0 Sunday in Sunshine League amateur baseball action in Alexandria.
Last week Vermeulen allowed just one walk in a no-hitter against Mount Vernon and Sunday he allowed one hit on an infield single in an eight-inning game shortened by the mercy rule. Vermeulen struck out 16 Mitchell hitters.
Jamie Huber took the loss for Mitchell, throwing the entire game and giving up 10 runs on 15 hits. He struck out five.
Jordan Gau, John Greicar and Chris Marek all had three hits for the Angels while Trevor Doyle and Chet McManus each recorded two.
The win moved Alexandria to 10-2 in the Sunshine League and the team will have a non-league game at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Wessington Springs before returning to Sunshine League action with a game against the Parkston Rock Bass at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Parkston.
Mitchell’s next league game is against Platte at 8 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell.
PARKSTON MUDCATS 15,

PARKSTON — Trevor Arnold didn’t allow a hit as he led the Parkston Mudcats to a 15-0 amateur baseball win over the Parkston Bullheads in five innings Sunday in Parkston.
Arnold struck out four and was given the big lead with the help of Spencer Freudenthal who was a homerun away from the cycle.
Matt Malloy and Jeff Heisinger each recorded three hits for the Mudcats and Dillon Dwyer and Anthony Williams each added two.
Rick Beckner took the loss for the Bullheads who fell to 1-5 in the Sunshine League.
PARKSTON ROCK BASS 3,
MOUNT VERNON 1
MOUNT VERNON — The Parkston Rock Bass took down Mount Vernon 3-1 in Sunshine League amateur baseball action Sunday in Mount Vernon.
Brandon Auch threw seven innings, striking out five for the win. Richie Wiese recorded a two-inning save and struck out five for Parkston.
Eric Denning was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs on 11 hits and striking out six.
For the Rock Bass, Dylan Mogck and Trevor Salmonson had three hits each and James Boehmer added two hits including a double.
Mount Vernon was led offensively by Tark Kingsbury who went 3-for-4. Chase Hetland had two hits for the Cardinals.
The Rock Bass improved their league record to 6-4 and take on Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Parkston while Mount Vernon’s game comes against Corsica/Stickney at 8 p.m. Thursday in Mount Vernon.
PLATTE — Phil Johnson struck out 10 in a complete-game win as Dimock/Emery defeated Platte 10-3 in Sunshine League amateur baseball action Sunday in Platte.
Johnson allowed six hits and two earned runs in the game and recorded two hits.
Sam Pischke had three hits and two RBIs for the Raptors while Jason Schmidt added two hits including a homerun. Schmidt finished with two RBIs.
Joe Millar took the loss for Platte, which was led at the plate by Audie Kuipers with two hits.
Dimock/Emery improved to 9-11 overall and 8-3 in the Sunshine League and will take on the Parkston Mudcats in league play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Emery.
The Killer Tomatoes will look to bounce back in their next game against Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Sunday in Platte.
