LETTER: Lake area destruction calls for answers

To the Editor:

We are losing lake habitat.

It seems that “leaders” in this town do not want public opinion and work behind closed doors. Are you aware of the proposed and occurring habitat destruction around the lake, while the algae grows wildly?

Who decided to close the swimming beach (next to the mayor’s house) for the summer, tear down three huge shade trees, rock and brick it in? What is the cost, including all expenses of labor and machinery? Was there a “public meeting” with the park director before it started?

Why is it necessary to relocate the dock by the Sportsmen’s Club, tear out over 60 trees and create a massive paved parking lot?

Who approved bulldozing trees between Sportsmen’s and the Day Camp this coming fall and installing curb and gutter? What is the cost? Who will benefit?

Will the proposed destruction of all of the trees on the east end of the lake, and addition of more unsightly pink rock, lead to significantly increased traffic noise?

Should we spend your money on these projects, rather than addressing the algae problem?

Has a biologist been consulted to outline the harmful effects of the above projects to the lake and fishery?

Why do we have large funds for the above projects that destroy trees yet no money to plant trees for Arbor Day in 2012? Why are projects that involve publicly owned trees and natural resources again being done behind closed doors and exactly how many other “proposals” are out there?

The public voted to preserve the land around Lake Mitchell in spite of extensive opposition, by their “leaders.” It is clear the public needs to keep asking questions, and keep their eyes wide open to see what these same leaders are trying to do to these public lands behind closed doors. Voters, ask your councilmen questions and demand truthful answers.
