PIERRE (AP) — South Dakota environmental regulators have issued an order requiring the city of Aberdeen to notify residents that they should boil water before drinking it.

The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources says samples show the presence of total coliform and E. coli bacteria in the Aberdeen water supply.
The state order also requires city officials to take steps to correct the problem. Corrective action may include chlorination and flushing the city's drinking water distribution system.
Bacteria in coliform and E. coli can make people sick if they do not boil water before drinking it. Infants, some elderly people and those with compromised immune system are particularly at risk.
People should seek medical advice if they have symptoms that include diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches.
