Mitchell firefighter paramedics attended to 5-year-old Isabelle Buss at 12:46 p.m. Tuesday following a vehicle-pedestrian accident at 1214 E. Second Ave. in Mitchell, the home of her neighbor Lance Buum .

According to Mitchell Patrol Officer Russ Stevenson, Buum was backing his Chevrolet pickup out of his driveway when Buss, who lives at 1220 E. Second Ave ., dashed from her family’s van and ran behind the truck.

“Some witnesses said the rear wheel of the truck ran over her stomach,” said Stevenson, but there were also conflicting reports. Buss’ stomach was scraped a little, Stevenson said, but there were no tire marks. “She said her stomach hurt a little, but not too bad.”

Buss was taken to the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital emergency room and was held at the hospital overnight for observation.

If the truck did roll over her, said Stevenson, “It’s some sort of a miracle.”
