Mitchell right-hander Evan Mastel had a team-high in wins on the mound this spring and was named to the South Dakota High School Baseball Association Class A all-state first team recently.

Mastel had a 2.12 ERA. He walked only two batters in seven appearances, 34 innings, and recorded 12 strikeouts.

“He was, by far, our most consistent pitcher,” Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. “The amount of walks he gave up was phenomenal.”

Mitchell shortstop Jared Schmidt and outfielder Lakin Neugebauer were named to the all-state second team.

Schmidt had a .339 batting average and 16 RBIs. He had two doubles and two triples and finished with a .921 fielding percentage.

Neugebauer had a .324 batting average with 12 RBIs. He was 12-of-12 in stolen bases and finished with a .927 fielding percentage.

“Lakin and Jared had really good offensive and defensive years,” Norden said. “I thought all three guys were very deserving of all-state.”

Mastel and Schmidt both can return next year, while Neugebauer was a senior and graduated.
