On a day with clear skies and great conditions, 77 golfers competed in the First Dakota National Bank Junior Golf Tour event held at Lakeview Golf Course Tuesday in Mitchell.
The South Dakota Golf Association hosts several events around the state for boys and girls. The tour consists of divisions for golfers from ages 16- to 18-years-old, 14- to 15-years-old, 12- to 13-years-old and 11-and under. Tuesday’s event did not have any girls compete in the 11- and under division.
Top five finishers on Tuesday in each division received gift certificates to Lakeview’s clubhouse while second- and third-place finishers received medals and champions earned plaques.
The best score of the day came from Trevor Tobin, of Brandon, who carded a 67 one day after shooting a hole-in-one on the course.
For the girls, Megan Mingo, of Yankton, scored a 69 for the low score.
“My putting was amazing today,” Mingo said.
Mingo said entering the day her best round of golf was a 73.
“That’s my best score ever,” she said. “It was pretty cool. I didn’t add it up until the end, it was awesome.”
Shea Stoltenberg, an intern with the SDGA, said the tour is a good way for younger players to enjoy the game of golf.
“It’s good for them to learn the right way to play golf and interact with kids their own age in sport,” he said. “They have a lot of fun and get a chance to play a lot of good courses.”
“The tour is a lot of fun,” Mingo said. “A lot of these people that I play with are my good friends and I’ve been doing this for about five years.”
The tour has a cost of $70 for players, which gets them into six tournaments in their region.
The Mitchell tournament is part of the Southeast region, which consists of 11 sites for events. Players can participate in more tournaments for a cost of $14 per event. There are two other regions which each consist of six events.
Kristin Sabers, of Mitchell, said she plays anywhere from six to 10 events and has been playing in the tour since she was in fifth grade.
“It shows you how to play golf the way you should and teaches you sportsmanship,” she said. “It’s a fun way to meet new people and get new experiences on different courses.”
Tuesday marked Sabers’ third event on the year and she will compete again today in Hartford. She shot an 80 on her home course for a second-place finish behind only Mingo in the 16-18 girls’ division.
