A local business was named runner-up for the Vicki Clarke Prairie Family Business of the Year award recently.

The runner-up honor went to the Shafer family of Shafer Memorials in Mitchell. The family was the 2011 Mitchell Area Family Business of the Year, making it one of 15 family businesses throughout the region to be considered for the award.

The Prairie Family Business Association, an outreach program of the Beacom School of Business at the University of South Dakota, presented three awards during the 20th annual Prairie Family Business Conference Award Banquet on March 30.

Honored as the Heritage Family Business of the Year were the Gonzenbach and Nef families of Valley Queen Cheese Factory in Milbank. The Vicki Clarke Prairie Family Business of the Year Award, endowed by the Clarke family of County Fair Foods in Mitchell and established in memory of Vick Clarke, was presented to the Larson family of Starion Financial in Bismarck, N.D.
