Winner native Abby Norrid has signed to continue her volleyball career at Mount Marty College, the school’s athletic department announced Monday.

Norrid recorded 23 kills, 586 assists and 548 digs for Winner last season. She holds the school record for assists and digs and was named to academic all-state and all-conference lists.

Trevor Tobin aces Lakeview’s No. 12

Trevor Tobin, a high school student from Brandon, shot a hole-in-one on hole No. 12 Monday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

Tobin, a member at the Mitchell course, made the 173-yard shot with a 5-iron while practicing for today’s First Dakota National Bank Junior Golf Tour event which begins at 9 a.m. at Lakeview.

Owls win three over weekend

Mitch McLagan pitched all nine innings as the Wessington Springs Owls amateur baseball team defeated Kimball/White Lake 8-2 Sunday in White Lake.

The win improved the Owls to 2-0 in the Pony Hills League and marked the third weekend victory after two wins over Winner/Colome on Saturday in Wessington Springs.

Two Owls starters, Adam Kaus and Kevin Pottebaum, had complete-game efforts on the mound Saturday and each recorded a four-strikeout inning as the team won game one 4-3 and game two 3-1.

Wessington Springs’ overall record sits at 8-2 with its next game coming against Plankinton at 8 p.m. Thursday in Plankinton.

Mount Vernon teeners win by 10

MOUNT VERNON — Charlie Mahaffey struck out 11 on the mound and recorded two hits as Mount Vernon defeated Corsica 12-2 in teener baseball action Monday in Mount Vernon.

Joe Davis collected three hits for Mount Vernon and Drew Frey added two hits including a double as Mount Vernon improved to 5-0 on the season and will take on Plankinton at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Plankinton.

Vikings’ Simpson suspended for three games

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has suspended Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson for the first three games of the 2012 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Simpson also was fined one game check.

He will be eligible to return to the team on Sept. 24 following its third game, but can participate in all preseason activities, including games.

Simpson was convicted this year on a felony drug charge. Law enforcement authorities tracked a shipment of 2 1/2 pounds of marijuana to his Kentucky home last year and found another pound of the drug inside.

Simpson was sentenced to 15 days in jail, three years of probation and 200 hours of community service plus a $7,500 fine and court costs.
