SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Sioux Falls on Friday is holding a grand opening celebration for the first phase of the downtown river greenway.

According to media reports, the festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. on the greenway between Sixth and Eighth streets, with the ribbon-cutting to be held on the amphitheater.

More improvements that include a $430,000 interactive water feature are yet to come.

Work on the $1.02 million second phase is expected to begin in July. The city plans to use surplus funding from last year's capital improvement projects budget pending council approval.

Design plans for the water feature and $295,000 stepped river edge were presented to the council this week. The stepped river edge is expected to be used as a place for people to hang out or eat lunch.
