Tom Young is starting to put his fingerprints on the Mitchell boys’ basketball program.
Earlier this week, Young and the Kernels took the court in a three-day varsity-JV camp that included mainly ball-handling and shooting drills.
The camp started Monday and concluded Wednesday.
“It was the first time I was with the team with any kind of instructing,” said Young, who was hired April 7 to take over for longtime coach Gary Munsen. “My focus this offseason is to try to get the kids better athletically and also try to have them become better shooters. Those are the two main focus points for the six months we have in the offseason.”
Mitchell will replace all five starters next season in Young’s first year coaching in Class AA basketball. Young previously spent 18 years at Mitchell Christian and two years at Hanson.
Since Young was hired at Mitchell, he’s met with each of the seniors individually, met with the team as a group and talked with the parents of the players.
He knows the team doesn’t have much returning experience from last year’s state runner-up season, but he’s trying to get the players focused on progressing their skills this offseason.
“I think we have some good athletes, and I know we have a lot of really good kids,” Young said. “I’ve been really impressed with their demeanor and attitude. With me being new to the program, we have to make up some time. I want them to strive to become better.”
Last week, Young had a camp for freshmen through seniors in Mitchell basketball. This week’s three-day camp was for only juniors and seniors.
Young said the team will participate in three basketball camps this summer, including the Cornbelt Conference camp, the Dakota Wesleyan University camp and a camp in Sioux Falls.
