Police are still in search of the driver involved in an apparent hit-and-run between 7 a.m. and 9:32 a.m. Tuesday in Mitchell that left a large hole in a local family’s camper.
According to Mitchell police, a camper parked in the 200 block of East Douglas Avenue was struck by another vehicle, which tore a hole approximately 6 foot by 6 foot in the back corner of the camper. The force of the collision pushed the camper about 20 feet forward and up onto the curb, the police report says.
A passenger-side mirror found at the scene is suspected to have broken off the offending vehicle in the crash . After bringing the mirror to a local car dealership, Mitchell police determined it most likely belonged to a Ford Explorer made between 1998 and 2001. Due to the significant amount of glass at the scene, police also suspect the passenger side window of the offending vehicle was broken out.
Nobody was in the camper when the crash occurred.
Authorities urge anyone with any information about the case to call the Mitchell Department of Public Safety at 995-8400 or Mitchell Crime Stoppers at 996-1700.
