EDGEMONT (AP) — A 20-year-old woman in a car that stopped to switch drivers was killed when a pickup truck struck the car from behind.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Jayme Shawn Manke was in the passenger seat on Dewey Road just north of Edgemont about 10 p.m. Wednesday when 20-year-old driver Elizabeth Jean Humiston got out and walked around to the passenger side.
Manke was moving across the front seat toward the driver's seat when the car was hit. She was taken to a Hot Springs hospital but died. Humiston was not hurt.
The Highway Patrol says the pickup truck driver, 18-year-old Kyle Thomas Stokes, suffered minor injuries and was arrested for driving under the influence at the scene. Attorney information for Stokes was not immediately available.
