Corps finds anomaly under Gavins Point apron

YANKTON (AP) — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials say they've found an "anomaly" under the apron at Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, but the issue doesn't appear serious.

According to media reports, a May 9 assessment using ground-penetrating radar was used to confirm damage to the area under the spillway slab. But the radar also revealed an unidentified abnormality under the apron, which is the concrete located downstream of the gates that helps prevent erosion.

Corps officials say the dam is safe and structurally sound.

The corps during last month's assessment of spillway damage halted releases at Gavins Point Dam for about eight hours. The dam sustained releases of 160,000 cubic feet per second for much of the summer, more than doubling the previous record.
