RAPID CITY (AP) — A former Rapid City mayor was arrested and jailed for fleeing police and resisting arrest.

Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says an officer had to draw his gun on former Mayor Jim Shaw Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say Shaw was driving 52 mph in a 40 mph zone in Rapid City when a police officer tried to pull him over. Shaw stopped, then drove away, then stopped again about a block away.

Police say Shaw then jumped out of his vehicle. The policeman drew his pistol when Shaw refused to follow instructions. Shaw was arrested with help from other officers.

Shaw spent an hour in jail before he was released on $300 bond. He couldn't be reached immediately for comment Wednesday. The Pennington County prosecutor is reviewing the case.
