Nebraska woman dies in crash near Burke

BURKE — A Nebraska woman died in a rollover accident Tuesday morning in Gregory County on state Highway 44 about 15 miles north of Burke.

Carissa Poppe, 21, of Hastings, Neb., was driving a 2009 Ford F250 pickup when she lost control and the vehicle left the roadway, crossed from the south ditch back into the north ditch and rolled. The crash occurred at 9:15 a.m.

Poppe was wearing a seat belt, said Capt. Kevin Joffer of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Burke Ambulance took her to Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, where she was pronounced dead.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash but has ruled out alcohol as a factor. The Gregory County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
