An investigator said Monday the natural gas-related explosion that shook a west Mitchell neighborhood Sunday evening is now regarded as suspicious.

Mitchell Police Detective Lt. Don Everson said the incident is now being investigated as a “suspicious explosion” but declined to provide any further details.

The explosion was reported at 6:07 p.m. at 808 W. Second Ave. No one was in the home at the time, and nobody was injured in the explosion.

Residents in nearby homes were evacuated for about two hours after the incident.

NorthWestern Energy spokesman Tom Glanzer said the explosion caused no apparent damage to nearby gas lines after crews performed checks this morning.
