Cadwell Park Sports Complex in Mitchell will see a lot of baseball over the next few days.

The complex plays host to five baseball tournaments beginning today and running through Sunday.

Two divisions of youth tournaments with kids in age groups of 10- and under and 13- and 14-year-olds will be playing while 13- and 14-year-old teeners will be playing on Drake Field and Cadwell Park.

“It should be a nice weekend of baseball,” said Trevor Arnold, a member of the Mitchell Baseball Association.

Mitchell has 11 teams playing this weekend in a field of 32 teams overall in the five divisions.

“This is a way to give more kids a chance to play,” Arnold said. “The more opportunity to play, the better they become.”

The MBA is hosting 10 teams in the 13- and 14-year-old teener tournament while the other four divisions playing are not associated with MBA, but sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

The youth baseball tournaments have been going on in Mitchell for years after Kiwanis member Bob Everson recommended a tournament be in the town.

“I started a traveling team about 13 years ago,” Everson said. “I thought if we go to all these other tournaments, why don’t we play in Mitchell? I suggested we hold a tournament and we’ve been doing it ever since.”

Everson said in both the 10- and under division and the 11- and 12-year old groups there are 11 teams. Five teams are labeled as “A” teams and six play in the “B” pool in each age group. Coaches classify themselves before signing up for the tournament.

In the 11- and 12-year old group Mitchell has three teams while the 10- and under has two “A” teams and three “B” teams.

Everson said the number of Mitchell teams has continued to grow and teams from other areas are joining the event.

“I like to see a lot of teams come play in it so they have some fun,” he said.
