Signup scheduled for today for Mitchell tennis

The Mitchell Tennis Association is hosting a root beer float social for its tennis league signup at 6:30 p.m. today at Hitchcock Park.

Those interested in joining a summer tennis league can show up to register, have a root beer float and play social tennis.

The Becky Moore State Farm Tennis Jamboree will be taking place May 31, the Mitchell Tennis Classic- juniors is scheduled for June 15-17 and the Mitchell Tennis Classic-adults is scheduled for Sept. 8-9.

Basketball camps to be held in June

The Cornbelt basketball team camps will be held in June in Mitchell, beginning with the varsity girls’ division on June 6-7.

The varsity boys’ camp is June 20-21, and the JV divisions of both girls’ and boys’ will be held June 13-14.

Avon beats Menno

AVON— Avon defeated Menno 1-0 in 10 innings Tuesday night in baseball action.

Joe Sees was the winning pitcher for Avon. He pitched 10 innings, allowed six hits and 19 strikeouts. Joey Cuka had the game-ending hit in the bottom of the 10th inning. Matt Yost had two hits.

Jeremy Wermers was the losing pitcher for Menno. Tate Bruckner had two hits.

Mudcats beat KWL 16-6

PARKSTON— The Parkston Mudcats defeated Kimball/White Lake 16-6 Wednesday night in amateur league baseball action.

Anthony Williams was the winning pitcher for the Mudcats. Roger Albrecht had a two-run homer, a double and a single. Jeff Harris had two hits and Matt Malloy had two hits.

Ryan Smith took the loss for Kimball/White Lake. He had a double.

The Mudcats improve to 5-1 overall and travel to Renner for their next game on Friday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Heat’s Haslem suspended for Game 6 of series

MIAMI (AP) — Heat forward Udonis Haslem has been suspended by the NBA for Game 6 of the Miami-Indiana series.

Haslem committed a flagrant foul against Indiana’s Tyler Hansbrough during the second quarter of Game 5 on Tuesday night, shortly after Hansbrough struck Miami’s Dwyane Wade and opened a cut over his right eye.

Haslem and Hansbrough were both assessed flagrant-1 fouls on the respective plays. If they were issued flagrant-2 fouls, they would have been ejected. Hansbrough’s foul was upgraded Wednesday to a flagrant-2, but he’s eligible to play in Game 6, while Haslem cannot.

Alexandria tops Wessington Springs Tuesday

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria defeated Wessington Springs 3-1 in amateur league baseball action Tuesday night in Alexandria.

Corey Marek was the winning pitcher for Alexandria, throwing seven innings and striking out seven.

Alexandria was led by Chris Marek, who had a two-run homerun. Tad DeRouchey was 2-for-4.

Arin Boschee took the loss for Wessington Springs. Logan Kopfmann was 2-for-3.
