Stabbing suspect released from jail
Investigation continues into Sunday incident.By: Anna Jauhola, The Daily Republic
A Mitchell woman accused of stabbing a man Sunday has been released from jail on her own recognizance.
Twila Hislaw, 31, allegedly stabbed a man in his back below the left shoulder in her apartment Sunday morning on the 600 block of West 15th Avenue. She was arrested for aggravated assault.
The Mitchell Police Division declined to release the victim’s name, but Detective Lt. Don Everson said the man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released Sunday from Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. The man suffered about an inch-wide stab wound, Everson said, but authorities are unsure how deep it was.
“There was quite a bit of blood, so it wasn’t superficial,” Everson said.
Hislaw allegedly called 911 regarding trouble at her home and stabbed the man before police arrived about 6:56 a.m. Sunday.
Police recovered several knives at the scene but weren’t sure at the time what weapon was used to harm the man. The victim told police he had been hurt in another way so authorities weren’t sure he’d been stabbed.
While authorities were determining what had happened, Hislaw ran inside, locked herself in her apartment and probably washed her hands and the knife she used, Everson said.
“We collected several knives from the residence and they will probably be subject to forensic testing in the future,” he said. “We believe we recovered the knife that was used in the assault.”
Everson said the investigation is ongoing.
