RAPID CITY — Howard’s Cal Wiese shot a 76 on day one to lead the boys’ field at the Class B state golf tournament Monday in Rapid City.

Wiese leads by two strokes over Freeman’s Arron Lickteig.

“Cal played a tremendous round of golf,” Howard coach Alan Wiese said. “If he doesn’t win, someone’s going to have to take it from him. I don’t think he’s going to give it away.”

As a team, Howard is tied for eighth along with Platte-Geddes at 274. Webster leads the boys’ standings with a 252, while Kimball’s score of 262 was good for fourth. For full results of area teams, see Page B3.

“The team wore down a bit toward the end of the round,” Alan Wiese said. “We should be contending for a higher spot, but we’ve got to play a little better.”

Alan Wiese believes his team can make a run at sixth place or better.

Kimball head coach Jan Miedema said his team, although 10 strokes down, still feels that first place is not out of the question.

“It’ll take some things going well, but 10 strokes is not something you can’t make up as a team,” he said.

Miedema feels his team can at least make a run for second place.

“The boys felt they didn’t golf their best today,” he said after the first round. “All four did some things well. They just didn’t combine all of them.

“We know we didn’t play our best, and we feel at least one team ahead of us did play its best already.”

On the girls’ side of Class B South Central leads as a team with a score of 268. Kristen Shanahan shot the best score for the team with an 81 and is in first place in the individual standings.

South Central coach Billie Jo Indahl could not be reached for comment.
